HYALURONIC ACID – WHAT IS IT?

Hyaluronic acid is used for creating volume in soft tissue and in particular as dermal filler for wrinkles.

It is a naturally occurring substance in skin tissue. As we age, the quality and quantity of this acid reduce, leading to changes in the skin. Hyaluronic acid assists in the skin rejuvenation process, maintaining a natural level of hydration by attracting water and retaining it in the deeper layers of the skin.

→ When it is injected it has a “plumping” effect on soft tissue and helps to correct wrinkles

HYALURONIC ACID – WHERE DOES IT COME FROM ?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in tissue throughout the human body – in the skin, the cartilage. It is therefore totally suitable for biomedical applications that target these areas. The first hyaluronic-based biomedical substance, Healon, was developed during the 1970s and was approved for use in ophthalmic surgery (cornea transplant, cataracts, glaucoma etc). It can also be used in treating arthritis in the knees – treatment is carried out using an injection (like Ostenil/TRB Chemedica) that goes into the knee joint, increasing the viscosity of the synovial fluid and providing lubrication to the joint.

It has been used in aesthetic medicine for a number of years, to correct wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid-based products like Restylane or Surgiderm, are preferred by doctors (as opposed to collagen) as there are fewer risks of allergies and the results last longer (from 6 to 12 months). It is, furthermore, a substance that is gradually and naturally re-absorbed into the body.

HOW DOES AN HYALURONIC ACID  INJECTION WORK ?

The doctor uses a micro-cannula to inject just under the surface of the skin. A session can last between 10 to 30 minutes depending on the number of wrinkles you want to treat.  No anaesthetic is usually required but a topical, surface cream (EMLA) can be used to numb the area first. No downtime is required – you can get on with your life as usual.
